Gulpener Beer brewery
Sustainable with guts to innovate
Founded in 1825, family-owned, led by the eighth generation, firmly independent. Environmental pioneer, Europe's most sustainable brewery, heading for fossil-free brewing by 2030. Barley and grains from own cooperative with 30 local farmers within 25 miles. Hops from Reijmerstok near Gulpen, harvesting with family and ‘Gulpener vrunden (friends)’, invariably concluded with the annual Hopfest.
Nice range of beers, daring to innovate, bold flavours, partly organic. Bocken for all seasons, pilsener, weizen, IPAs, blonde, old brown, non-alcoholic. Refreshing Korenwolf, named after protected Limburg wild hamster, as a tribute to nature. Château Neubourg, since the turn of the century, premium pilsner, subtly spicy, fruity and malty.
Gerardus abbey beer, always in the three classic varieties, sometimes more, recently also special beers. Taken over when the Redemptorist fathers at the monastery in Wittem stopped brewing. Named after the Italian Gerardus Majella of the same order, never lived there, but a place of pilgrimage for him since his canonisation in 1893.
BATU Kombucha, unique line of low-alcohol beer brewed from kombucha, fermented tea. Lots of fruit, no added sugars. Ginger & Lemon, Lime & Mint, Passion Fruit & Hops. Inca Trail, one timer limited edition, with Peruvian camu camu berries and feijoa guava, a tropical surprise with a mix of flavours.
Guided tour from brewhouse to bottling line, microbrewery and taste library. In the centre of Gulpen, where it once began in 1825, beer lines across the road unmissable. Welcome with UR lager, presentation on 'the free brewer', blind beer quiz, end in tasting room with large terrace garden.
Range of packages, from guided tour and co-brewing to workshops and high beers. Right in the centre of Gulpen, on the main road. Bushalte voor de deur. Nearby parking at Willem Alexanderplein or a little further away at Tramweg.
